Sammie W. Pridgen

Sammie Whittington Pridgen of Snow Hill peacefully passed away on Sunday April 22, 2018, at Greendale Forest in Snow Hill. Sammie was born on May 10, 1928, to Sam and Lela Murphy Pridgen of Greene County.

A man of strong faith, Sammie was a devoted lifetime member of Rainbow United Methodist Church and served his church in many capacities. He was a Trustee, chairperson of stewardship, and served on many other committees and boards. Until his health declined, he could always be found helping cook the pigs for the annual church BBQ and any other task that needed his attention.

Sammie was dedicated to his family. He cherished his wife and shared a special bond with all of his family; having his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren visit always put a smile on his face when they walked in the room. The happiest moments for Sammie were when all the family was together. Sammie had a generous heart and provided a wonderful home for his wife and family and always lent a helping hand to friends and people in the community.

He loved the land and enjoyed farming and seeing the crops and his garden grow. Sharing what he grew with people in the community, was a joy for him. After his retirement from farming Sammie enjoyed working with Central Heating and Air. He enjoyed fishing and sharing the fish he caught with family and friends. He had a special bond with his dogs and loved playing with them and riding them around in his truck. One to never be idle, his mind and hands stayed busy. An avid fixer upper, he loved tackling projects and figuring out solutions to whatever wasn’t working correctly and making it work again.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Burnice Lee Pridgen.

He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Clara Beaman Pridgen; his children, Ray Pridgen (Carol) of Snow Hill, Tricia Laws (Jerry) of Lexington, and Paul Pridgen (Susan) of Greenville; his grandchildren, Michael Pridgen (Heidi) of Greenville, Melissa Dixon (Michael) of Snow Hill, Jennifer Beasley (Kevin) of Morehead City, Gretchen Laws of Friendsville, TN, Samuel Pridgen of Greenville; and his great-grandchildren Raeanne Dixon, Molly Beasley, Lillie Pridgen, Will Beasley, Reagan Dixon, and Tucker Pridgen.

Funeral services to remember and celebrate Sammie’s life will be held 2 PM Wednesday, April 25, at Rainbow UMC with Reverend Patrick Keely officiating. Interment will follow in the Rainbow Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 12:30 – 1:45 PM in the church fellowship hall on Wednesday prior to the service and other times at the Pridgen residence.

The family would like to especially thank Dr. Steven Hamstead, The 6th floor staff at Vidant, and the staff of Greendale Forest Nursing Home.

In Lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to Rainbow UMC, c/o Ray Pridgen, 704 Greenridge Road, Snow Hill, NC 28580. Online condolences at
