Jock Kearney



Mr. Joshua “Jock” Lawrence Kearney, 93, passed away Friday, September 29, 2017, at the NC State Veterans Home in Kinston. A native of Greene County, he was born May 3, 1924, the son of William Berry Kearney and Betsy Johnson Kearney. Jock was a veteran of the US Army having served during WWII. Following the war, he returned to Greene County and established his vocation as a farmer until his retirement. An accomplished musician, he was a talented banjo player and particularly enjoyed playing with various local bluegrass groups. Devoted to his family, Jock was always present at the ballgames of his grandchildren and was happiest when all of his family were gathered at the home place with he and his late wife, Bettie Jean Watson Kearney. Jock attended Mewborn Primitive Baptist Church.

His surviving family includes his sons, Roger L. Kearney of Snow Hill and Barry G. Kearney and wife, Ann of Ayden; grandchildren, Michael Kearney and wife, Rebecca, Christy Kearney Stroud and husband, Jeremy, and Stephen Kearney and wife, Emily, all of Snow Hill; great-grandchildren, Sydney Dail, Adam Kearney, Ava Kearney, Easton Kearney, Jesse Stroud, Jase Stroud, Brittany Anderson and Joshua Anderson; a special daughter-in-law, Judy Sugg of Snow Hill; sister-in-law, Margie McComas of Havelock; and brother-in-law, Ed Taylor of Snow Hill.

Graveside services will be held 10 AM Monday, October 2, at the Snow Hill Cemetery with Military Honors. Jock’s grandson-in-law, Jeremy Stroud and other family members will officiate the service.

The family will receive friends on Sunday evening from 6 -8 PM at Taylor-Tyson Funeral Service and other times at the Kearney residence. The family would like to extended their thanks and appreciation to the staff of the NC State Veterans Home in Kinston for their kind care and support shown to Mr. Kearney.
