Obituary

Mr. John Richard Murphy Jr, 85, died Friday evening, February 9, 2018. A native of Greene County, he was born May 27, 1932, the son of John Richard and Sallie Dixon Murphy. As many of his generation, Mr. Murphy found his vocation and passion tending the soil; not only farming row crops but also a pristine vegetable garden each spring and summer. He was an excellent cook and an invitation to partake in one of his stews was a treasured commodity and receiving a jar of his preserves was cherished gift. A Christian, he was a member of Free Union OFWB Church and as an avid hunter and fisherman always felt one could be closest to God when surrounded by His creation.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Murphy was preceded in death by his beloved and devoted wife of 65 years who died November 19, 2017; and his siblings, J.B. Murphy, James Harold Murphy, Earl Murphy, Helen M. Braxton and Lewellyn M. Bowen.

His surviving family includes his daughters, LouAnn Murphy Parker and husband, Randy of Jamestown, Vanessa Murphy Hardy and husband, Mike of Snow Hill; sons, John Richard Murphy III and wife, Kay, and James Fredrick Murphy and wife, Mollie, all of Snow Hill; grandchildren, Ryan Murphy and wife, Bobbie, Christi Murphy Johnson and husband, Shea, Colby Murphy, Katelyn Hardy and fiancé Ben Rouse, and West Hardy; great-granddaughters, Addison Johnson and Ellie Murphy; and brother-in-law, John Edward Sugg, III. Additionally, Doris Hall who was a devoted caregiver to him and his late wife.

Services will be held graveside 2 PM Tuesday, February 13, at the Snow Hill Cemetery, 1111 Kingold Blvd, with Reverend Stephen Prescott officiating.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service and other times at the Murphy residence, 2978 Hwy 258 N, Snow Hill. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Free Union OFWB Church, 2573 Firetower Road, Walstonburg, NC 27888.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff of Greendale Forest for the care and kindness shown to Mr. Murphy and the family.
