Mrs. Sylvia Cunningham Nethercutt, 76, passed away Friday evening, January 19, 2018. A native of Greene County, she was born October 19, 1941, the daughter of Roland and Nellie Pate Cunningham.
Following graduation from high school, Sylvia attended the Lenoir Memorial School of Nursing graduating in 1962 and becoming a Registered Nurse; in 1975 she graduated from East Carolina University where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Following 13 years of clinical nursing at Cherry Hospital, she joined the Wayne County Schools where she taught health occupations (HOSA) for 16 years. In 1986 she was named the HOSA advisor of the year for North Carolina and was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine in 1987 in recognition of her contributions to HOSA and the students it served. Sylvia completed her teaching career by returning to the Greene County Schools and initiating the HOSA program at Greene Central High School. While accomplishing much professionally as a nurse and educator, her first love was her family and she cherished being a wife, mother, and grandmother. Sylvia was a member of Brooks Frizzelle Memorial United Methodist Church where she worshiped for many years and served on various church committees and boards.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a step-grandson, David Jennings Dawson III; and siblings, Roland Cunningham, Jr, Mack P. Cunningham, Dixie C. Braxton, and Jerry A. Cunningham, Sr.
Her surviving family includes her husband, Robert Lynn “Bob” Nethercutt; daughter, Carla Nethercutt Dawson and husband, David of LaGrange; grandson, Robert David “Rob” Dawson of LaGrange; sisters, Annalean C. Reeves and husband, Edward Earl of Goldsboro and Janice Cunningham Raper and husband, Wayne of Snow Hill; brother, Joe Cunningham and wife, Ann of Goldsboro; and several nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service to remember and celebrate Sylvia’s life will be held 2 PM Tuesday, January 23, at Brooks Frizzelle Memorial United Methodist Church. Committal services will be held privately at the Snow Hill Cemetery at a later time.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall and other times at the Nethercutt residence. Mama Ned was my teacher but more than that she was our friend and someone who always was there for us. Her caring and words of love and wisdom have stayed with me always. We were all blessed that she was a part of our lives. Heaven has received a beautiful angel. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Gina Thornton Hosea Class of 81.

I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the wonderful woman that i have tried to model my nursing career after. She is the reason I decided to pursue a career in nursing. My career has served me well and also brought me into education.

Mrs. Nethercutt touched the lives of many people and helped guide their futures. She was a wonderful teacher and will be missed.
