Richard Vernon McGaughy

Richard Vernon McGaughy, age 72, of the Dover community in Craven County, North Carolina, passed away after declining health, Saturday morning, July 8, 2017. Vernon was born December 11, 1944, the son of G.R. "Bob" McGaughy and Estelle Martin McGaughy.

Following graduation from Greene Central High School, Vernon spent his entire working career with E.I. DuPont in Kinston, which began in 1965 until his retirement in 2002. He cherished his work as a Master Welder and the many people he worked with over his extensive career. In addition, Vernon was an Adjunct Welding Instructor at Lenoir Community College for many years where he enjoyed sharing his knowledge with others.

Vernon's greatest passions in life were love for family, fishing and hunting, and boating the
waterways of Eastern North Carolina where he was a fixture on the weekends. He was an avid sportsman from a very early age. He was a member of local hunting clubs, including the Ft. Barnwell Hunting Club, where many years of hunting and friendships were enjoyed.

He is survived by his daughter, Donna McGaughy Amon, of Wake Forest; his mother, Estelle McGaughy Brown of Snow Hill; two brothers, Dennis McGaughy of Snow Hill and Ellis McGaughy and wife, Karen of Fayetteville; and his three grandchildren, James Morgan Tisdale of Wake Forest, Elizabeth Michelle Amon of Asheville, and John Michael Amon of Goldsboro.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 12 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Taylor-Tyson Funeral Service in Snow Hill. In keeping with Mr. McGaughy’s wishes, no other formal services will be held.
