Obituary

Mattie Ruth Proctor Harrison, of 1007 Clifton Terrace, died Thursday evening the 27nd day of April, 2017, at the age of eighty-five. A native of Edgecombe County, she was born March 16, 1932, the daughter of the late, Samuel Louis Proctor and Annie Mae Griffin Proctor. Following graduation from South Edgecombe High School in 1951, Ruth entered East Carolina College from which she graduated in the spring of 1955 with a degree in education. Her teaching career spanned one year in the Granville County School System, one year in the Lenoir County School System, and twenty-eight years in the Kinston City School System. Following her retirement, she was a devoted caregiver to her mother-in-law, Addie Sowers Harrison, and a special aunt, Emily Trevathan Bulluck.

While a student at East Carolina, she met her future husband, Fred Harrison of Snow Hill, and they were married on August 14, 1955, at the United Methodist Church of Pinetops. In August of 1956, they moved to Kinston where Fred established a law practice and she continued her career as a teacher.

Ruth enjoyed needle work, especially counted cross stitch, reading, cooking and owned an extensive collection of cookbooks. In the later years of her life, she enjoyed cooking with the assistance of her husband, Fred.

Her full and active life included having served as a Sunday School Teacher at Westminster UMC, where she was a member for sixty years. She was also a member of the Wesleyan Service Guild, the Lena Seymour Circle, and a proud member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society.

Ruth is survived by her husband of sixty-one years, Fred; daughters, Teresa Harrison Harrell and husband, Norris of Macclesfield, and Kimberly Ruth Harrison Smith and husband, Harry of Swansboro; six grandchildren, Harrison Grey Smith of Atlantic Beach, Jacob Michael Smith of Swansboro, Austin Norris Harrell, John Clayton Harrell, and Laura Elizabeth Harrell Hughes, all of Macclesfield, and Rebecca Caitlin Harrell Sugg of Pinetops; nine great-grandchildren; her sisters, Janie P. Brimmer of Bowie, MD, Barbara P. Baker and Shirley P. Peterson, both of LaGrange; and a brother, Larry Thomas Proctor of Gove, OK.

In addition to her parents, Ruth was also preceded in death by her brothers, Marvin Alvin Proctor, Samuel Louis Proctor, and Benjamin Ray Proctor.

A Service of Death and Resurrection to celebrate her life will be held 2 PM Tuesday, May 2, at Westminster UMC. Interment will immediately follow at the Snow Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday at the church one hour prior to the service and other times at the residence, 1007 Clifton Terrace, Kinston.
